For Council in 2022
Service to the community has been my life
I have proudly served this community at many levels for more than 30 years, in the media, as a volunteer, and as a council representative. I am passionate about my hometown and enjoy contributing to our quality of life. I have lived and worked in Collingwood with my wife, Susan, since 1990. We share our home with three indoor rescue cats and a rescue dog, all from the local humane society. We love our home town.
My Background and Experience
I have served as a volunteer on many local boards, committees and associations for three decades, including the Greening of Collingwood, Special Olympics, Remedial Action Plan PAC for Collingwood Harbour, Ride for Sight, public library board, museum board, Optimists Club, ukulele club, Mother of All Yard Sales, the humane society, Simcoe County museum and archives board, Maclean Hunter and Rogers Community TV, and more. I am currently on the board of a non-profit long-term care facility.
I previously served as councillor in Collingwood for three terms, from 2003 to 2014. During that time I was the council rep on the library board, hospital board, BIA, Vision 2020, Affordable Housing Task Force, museum board, Elvis Festival board, airport service board, and others. I am proud to have served on the councils that developed a new library and municipal offices, a new fire hall, a new arena, an upgraded police station, new parks, a new airport terminal, an upgraded downtown, extended trails, and a year-round swimming pool.
Business and Work
I was a reporter/photographer and later editor for the local newspaper (Enterprise-Bulletin) covering a wide range of community politics and issues, plus the local correspondent for CBC Radio for many years. I worked as a freelance writer for national and international publications, as a book and magazine editor, and was owner/operator of the local UPS Store for over a decade. I also taught website design, produced newsletters for the electricity, mining, and water sectors, and ran a workshop in media relations.
I have contributed articles to Municipal World magazine, and am the author of four published books including three about municipal communications and technologies. I was the Communications Coordinator for the Ontario Municipal Water Association for almost five years, helping advocate for clean, safe drinking water and water-related legislation across the province, and helping educate members on water-related issues. I continue to offer freelance consulting services for writing, communications, public relations, and media.
My personal interests and hobbies include reading, writing, photography, gardening, science, playing music (guitar and ukulele), blogging, baking bread, website design and development, Shakespeare, Machiavelli, walking with my wife and dog around the community, politics, classic movies, computer gaming, typography, graphic design, editing, animal behaviour, philosophy, poetry, Chaucer, history, science fiction, and making homemade pasta. I believe in lifelong learning and community service.
